About Smarter Collaboration
What is Smarter Collaboration ?
Today’s increasingly complex problems (and opportunities) can only be tackled by successfully harnessing diverse perspectives and knowledge.
Developed by Dr. Heidi K. Gardner and Ivan Matviak, smarter collaboration is hyper-intentional collaboration across different departments, expertise bases, and teams within an organization to solve high-value challenges that no one could address effectively on their own. Smarter collaboration involves:
Being hyper-intentional
Collaborating across silos
Harnessing expertise
Solving complex high-value problems
“A strategic advantage in a fast-evolving
and competitive business landscape”
Achieving Better Outcomes
Our research and client successes empirically demonstrate that organizations practicing smarter collaboration consistently achieve better outcomes:

Higher growth

Innovation - more frequent, higher adoption

More strategic relationships with clients

Stronger ability to attract, engage, and retain talent

Efficiency - less duplication and rework

More successful integration of new hires
The Science of Smarter Collaboration
Origins and Accolades
Sparked by a burning question about team dynamics while leading projects at McKinsey & Company and Bain & Company, our team has devoted decades to developing the science behind smarter collaboration. Dr. Gardner and Mr. Matviak have authored more than 100 books, chapters, case studies, and articles. Dr. Gardner's research received the Academy of Management’s prize for Outstanding Practical Implications for Management, and has been selected five times for Harvard Business Review’s “best of” collections.
The Science
Smarter collaboration is grounded in data, math, and analytics – based on the strongest validated principles from organizational behavior, psychology, and behavioral economics research. The underlying research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed academic journals and replicated by scholars around the world.
Our Focus
At Smarter Collaboration International and Gardner & Co, our research focuses primarily on bringing the practice of smarter collaboration to life. Our ongoing research develops and tests pragmatic ways for individuals and organizations to embed collaborative working in order to achieve commercial, strategic, and talent-related benefits.
Our Results-Oriented Team
Our teams engage constantly with global companies, professional firms, and governmental and non-profit institutions to evolve the research and maintain its focus on practical, results-oriented how-to’s and performance-boosting outcomes.
